Going In
I know Kiyoshi Kurosawa's films primarily by reputation, and most of that reputation stems from his association with horror and thriller storytelling. I had only seen Cure before, which I liked for its philosophical, surreal take on thrillers like Se7en, but otherwise his films have just been on an ever-growing watchlist.
Earlier this year, I heard that he had a new film premiering at Cannes, and that it was a departure from his usual style, specifically a jidaigeki film. While I don't think I have enough experience with his work to form an informed opinion on how well he moves between genres, I'm always a big fan of artists stepping outside their comfort zones, and I was excited to watch it purely for that reason.
